why are the 2012 giant escape city priced higher than the 2013 giant escape city?

I was looking around for a bike and noticed the 2012 w giant escape city was originally priced at $570 and the 2013 w giant escape city was originally priced at $545. Now both are on sale for essentially the same price. Is the 2012 better then the 2013? The LBS said all looked the same and she thinks Giant just lowered their price point, so the only advantage to the newer model is for resale value.

I was initially going to buy the 2013 giant escape 2, but on sale I can buy the 2013 escape city for the same price. I was told by the LBS that the only difference between the 2 was the extra "bells and whistles like racks and fenders but all other components and the frame itself were the same. If thats true, the escape city sounds like the way to go, but I wanted to get other opinions or see if there was something she missed.

Background: women, havent ridden in a while, recreational riding on mostly street, with occasional easy bike trails, live in a hilly area of s. ca
Thanks to all!

First off...LINKS NOOB! (we need a sticky at the top of the forum to remind people to post links)

Second, the tires, fenders, rack, and fork are different. The fork is now steel;that right there would get me to buy the '13. Straight blade alloy forks do not ride well. I would think steel would be more expensive, but who knows. The tires no longer have reflective sidewalls and seem to have more tread(just going by the pic on the site),but that's not a deal breaker and tires are easily swapped(much easier than swapping a fork). The rack and fenders are different, again no big deal. They eliminated the rack straps so you'll have to buy your own,and the '12's fender flaps were just for show,so you'd wind up having to add you own anyway for proper protection.

So basically, you get a much better fork, different tires, and save some money. I'd go with the '13 for the fork alone.

Thanks for bearing w/ me dynaryder and for looking into it despite my posting links, greatly appreciated! I just placed my order for the 2013 w giant escape city and am very excited! Im 5'3 and 107lbs and the LBS said Im right in between a XS and SM size. They have to order the bikes so Im unable to test and see which is better (a different LBS told me I was on an 18" frame yesterday which I think was incorrect b/c thats a med and sounds too big for me) Anyway, this LBS taking my order suggested an XS...anybody have differnt thoughts?

Excellent linking and congratulations on your choice!

I wouldn’t be overly concerned about choosing between an XS and S. If you’re uncomfortable with the fit when it arrives a reputable shop will happily reorder a size that meets your needs.

I would consider what stand over height would be appropriate.
Basically as much as you can handle without being "inappropriate".

Hi, I can say that when I owned a Giant Sedona ST I took a large, but when I bought my Giant Escape 2 I took an XL because it felt better to me than the Escape2 Large. But that's just me, my body type. Broad shoulders and burly. Had they not had the XL in stock I would have taken the large and would have been fine, I just felt the XL handled better for me. Nice bike by the way and welcome.
