I bought Hybrids lately cause of the horrible Seattle traffic. I have a motorcycle I might sell because riding in this region is not fun.
At least with bicycles you can ride on the sidewalk mostly.

I am so glad I don't fall for peer pressure.
I ride on what and how I want.
I have a road bike, love the speed but got tired of numb hands, sore butt, and stiff neck (yes I have had my bike fitted quite a few times)
Finally I said screw it.
So I converted my road bike into a hybrid and never looked back.
I replaced my butt splitting road bike seat and bought a wider more comfortable seat.
Bought a taller quill and replaced my drops with high rise MTB style handle bars for a more upright ride.
HOLY CRAP! I still have the speed minus 1 to2 MPH (big whoop)
I don't do any sanction type races because (((GASP)) I don't wear a helmet
I don't wear the spandex I wear tshirt, typical regular shorts and tennis shoes when I am hauling ass down the road
I can still beat roadies in unsnaction races in my area with my hybrid
Do I come in first? NO
Do I come in last? NO
Do I care? NO
Am I comfortable and could ride forever pain free? YES
Am I having so much fun I could care less what others think hauling ass down the road and even passing a few roadies along the way?
HELL YES!
Don't follow the "in" crowd and thinking this is what I should be using or wearing
Go to the beat of your own drum and really have fun
(((stepping off my soap box now )))

I agree with EVERYTHING Delta said with the following exceptions:
1. I have not changed the seat on my Giant Fastroad. My butt seems to be adapting to the narrow seat.
2. My GF recently bought me a nice helmet for my birthday and I now wear it regularly (after years of riding w/o a helmet).
3. I believe in a more upright riding position so it is easier to see ahead without straining my neck.
Well said Delta. I am open to suggestions but nobody is gonna tell me what should work for me or what should be comfortable for me. I am resourceful enough to figure it out on my own.
Funny but yesterday I was out on my new Giant and I was passed by a roadie for the first time. I realized almost immediately that I did not care.

My thought on it is, if you're riding solo, ride whatever you want at whatever pace you want.
If you are riding as part of a group, bring the bike that you can keep up on.
If its a 16-18 mph average group and you can do that on your hybrid, then come on.

I just bought a hybrid to start commuting on. My biking goals have been simple, I just want to get there and back, wherever there is.... I have broken bones in every region of my body, including my neck. Traditional road bikes are painful for me, given my neck is fused. The good news is that not many of the elite cyclists tease me. Not that I am a huge and scary looking dude, but they somehow know that it would not be in their best interest, given I would be more than willing to have a bike race right after a few rounds of sparing
Meant tongue in cheek for the folks with no sense of humor, if that ever happened amongst some cyclists....

I do not ride roads unless I have to. I keep to bike paths along the beach and greenbelt paths. If I need distance or endurance training I jump on the river trail.
I wear padded Briefs and regular shorts and a mountain biking loose fitting jersey..if its cold sometimes a sweatshirt whattttttttt..
I do clip in only because it helps with the cadence but when not really training I can be seen riding in flip flops.whhattttttttt
Never had the desire for a road bike, never will, I refuse to shave my legs and make fun of those who do
I told my whippet road bike buddy if he ever shaved his legs I would have to think twice about riding with him on his easy days along the beach.

Oh well; with luck this zombie thread will morph into a full-on "I passed a roadie" or a "waving" thread; we haven't had one of either for a while. They are always fun.

This deservedly-dead thread that you've now revived was sub-titled, in part, "I don't care what people say". Apparently you do -- else why go on and on about it?

Why would this be a "deservedly-dead thread"?
Because someone says it should be?
I didn't know threads had an expiration date on them
If that's the case, then all threads on this forum should be deleted after no one has posted for a while.
Screw the ones that have just joined and it's all new to them and might have something to say or read someone's opinion on a certain subject just to see what others have to say, huh?
I DON'T care what other people say, does that means I cant have an opinion or make a general statement?
What a great idea, maybe there should be new thread and try it out.
It might be fun indeed.
I'm game.
If no one replies in awhile it can be labeled a "zombie" thread and be deleted.
That way no one can ever read it again.

You certainly devote a lot of time into telling us how much you don't care what other people think.

I for one, applaud anyone who revives a thread that is interesting/important to them, and shares with the rest of us.... I thought that was why stuff is archived.

Let's just say that I been bashed a few times on group rides. Last week was bad, they said I will be left behind on my bike.
I bought my bike earlier this year and I'm still new to cycling. I'm no pro and I'm not trying to be one, I'm just enjoying the sport. For each ride I have done (30-50 miles), I was always able to keep up and always came up in the middle of the group. I'm not even in cycling gear so I did stick out.
Don't get me wrong a road bike is great but for me, I love being able to do trails too.
I don't know what the big deal is, it seems that some (not all) cyclists are judging fellow riders by their bike.

I wish more people were Post Thread Nazi's instead of creating new threads on subjects already covered. That way you get the benefit of reading tons of info from the last time the thread was active as well as active info.

Apparently things have changed since I rode my first century over 30 years ago. As I remember, most of the guys didn't ride with the "right clothes" and the bikes tended to be everything from soup to nuts, and I don't remember anyone talking trash about anyone else. Everyone was just out for a fun ride.
I too have a hybrid. I didn't know it would be offensive to anyone? Who knew? Funny times we live in. Anyway, I just saw a video the other day about a guy explaining the difference between racing/road bikes and hybrid bikes. I was sure glad I bought what I bought. Didn't pay an arm and a leg and now I can feel free to replace components without thinking my expensive components that were on the bike when I bought it are now just garage dust collectors.

I have a hybrid, a very nice one. Not once has anybody made a negative remark about it. In fact, I have received nothing but complements. Around where I'm at, people don't ride for pleasure. They either ride to make money, or they have to get some place that's close enough to where they don't want to have to drag the car out. As for the roadies: I had one ride in front of me a few days ago, center lane. When turning left, the bicyclist stayed in the center lane until he completed his turn. I simply followed. After completing his turn, the bicyclist got back on the right part of the lane, and I passed just like he was driving another car. No big deal. I am sure other motorists would have made it into an issue, but I have a nice vehicle and don't want to get other people upset. And that, my friends, is how I keep the paint on my car nearly perfect. And everybody is happy.
When I ride my hybrid, I stay on the right side of the road, or ride on authorized sidewalks and keep the pace of pedestrians when, or if they are present. I don't take the country roads. I don't bother with trails. I am out there to WORK. Not to play. Not to socialize. Not to cause trouble. Not to get into an altercation. To WORK. Nothing more, nothing less. That's how it's done around these parts.

Im in the process of converting my roadie. Handlebars only. Plus new brake levers, gear shifts. Bar ends. . handgrips,. . .sounds like a lot o work, but my stiff neck is having words with me everytime I ride this thing at the moment.
The tires will remain the same. . . it rolls well.

Been there. Once you have converted your bike, you'll wonder why you never did it a long time ago. You will also realize it doesn't really slow your speed all that much (at least it hasn't with me)
