I recently redid my Trek hybrid which was 3 years old. Made it a 1x9 speed since I never really used anything but the outer chainring. Got a new single chainring crank, Deore V-brake levers, Alivio SL-M410 8 speed shifter, 12-23 rear cassette (for increments more like my 10 speed) and got a new 8 speed chain (after old one measured out to be worn). Also had to buy a inner chain guard to prevent derailing to the inside. ~$175. Love the bike more than ever!

Your bike seems like a good one and it is worth it to upgrade as long as you don't go crazy.
