    Question about bar ends and comfort

    So I did some searching and did not really find a good answer to my question. I have been logging about 130 miles per week on my Fuji Absolute flat bar road bike. Before I added bar ends, I would get numb hands no matter how I positioned my saddle/altered my ride position.

    The numbness only occurred during my more intense (17 - 18MPH average) rides. When out with my wife riding 8 - 10MPH I could go 30 miles with no issues. Anyway, I added some bar ends and find that if I ride with my hands on the furthest part of the ends and really stretched out, I would not get numb hands. Problem solved, right?

    The issue I have now is that I am doing my "fitness rides" as I call them - all 20 miles using my bar ends only. As my hands get sweaty I find it really hard to keep a grip on the bare metal ends. Would it be feasible to use bar tape on my bar ends? Any other solution?

    If you're willing to spend - get the Ergon grips+bar ends. I use thinly padded gloves ($6 Nashbar), and I'm planning to cut up an old tube and use that to wrap the bar ends. Will let you know how that works out!

    Get some gloves. Better grip on the bar ends, and should you (god forbid) have a crash, your palms will thank you.

    Figure 8 bend trekking bars are another, relatively easy parts swap,

    the brakes and shifters transfer easily with out taking the cables loose.

    I pad mine with a couple layers of tape..

    you get a near and far reach.. a little bend in your elbows
    gets you a lean into the headwind posture.,like 'in the drops'.

    I switched from flat bars with bar ends to NASHBAR trekking bars on my MTB turned "hybrid" a few months ago. I liked the old setup OK but I love the trekking bars! I'm currently rebuilding a K2 Escape 1.0 hybrid to be my new beater/bad weather bike and it is getting trekking bars as well.

    Typical bar tapes are too thick for bar ends. End result will be UGLY(I tried).
    Outer grip for tennis racket works fine. They are inexpensive and come in various colors.
    Hockey tape might work as well.
    If you have long bar ends you can use track grips(works great).

    Your hand numbness problem might be caused by the grips being too plush.
    I find plush grips are great for a short ride but, I always get persisting numbness for rides longer than 2hrs.
    I replaced my grips with thin flange-less BMX grips and the numbness problem went away.

    You can put many things on bar ends to make them more comfortable.
    Simple foam grips meant for flat handlebars work, but might be too loose and have less control.
    Using bar tape meant for drop handlebars is a very good idea ... I personally like the type with added gel for extra comfort.
    Whatever works for you.

    I really appreciate all of the helpful responses. You all have given me lots of good options to try - I may start with some nice gloves, then work from there.

    IMHO, good gloves with grips are one of the most important pieces of your gear.
    I used bar ends and loved how much they improved my power when I was up on the pedals. I wrapped them with bar tape and they looked fine. I just hate having to use electrical tape to finish bar tape off.
    I have since moved on to trekking bars. So far so good.

    All triathletes and TT riders have bartape on their aero extensions and they almost all finish it off with "electrical tape", as you call it.
    As long as you keep the colors matching and do it right it looks neat

    I second the emotion on the Ergons. I have the GP3 'medium' length ones, in the larger hand grip size as I have XL hands.



    since taking that picture, I've narrowed the bars by about 2" (1" from each side) so now they are just about as wide as my shoulders. you don't grab them as much as just rest your hands on them, with your thumb hooked around the ends, and your palms on the outside curvey-part.

    they work /great/ for me.
