To the point where things are breaking! - Advice for new Salsa Vaya Ti drivetrain?

Hello All,

After about 3,500 miles on my 57cm Salsa Vaya Ti (2012), I can declare that this is the greatest bicycle that I have owned. To that end, I want to move from the current stock Sugino XD 600 triple and bar end shifters to a full SRAM 2X10 drivetrain. Looking for comments on: 1) what level of SRAM (X.5, X.7 crankApex, etc.), 2) 39/26 or 42/28 configuration, 3) rear cassette (I would really like to go to a 36 tooth granny, especially if I'm going to a 28 tooth small ring.

I've attached a photo of the bike, taken on the Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park last summer.

Where you going to get a 39/26 or 42/28 double?
IF you need a 26/28 small ring, you'd best stick to a triple.

What's breaking?

You may be better off going to a 22-32-42/44 mountain crank with a 12-27 cassette.

First,what parts are on the bike now? Is the bike 9 or 10spd? Second,as Bill said,there are no 39/26 or 42/28 doubles unless you buy a crankset and swap the rings. Finally,what do you mean by "I would really like to go to a 36 tooth granny, especially if I'm going to a 28 tooth small ring"? The 'granny ring' is the smallest ring.

From what I can get out of your post,I think you should stick with the triple and maybe just swap out the bar ends for brifters.

Not sure about a couple of the responses, so let me clarify. I'm considering the SRAM X.5 or X.7 crank, which does come in 2X10 choices of 39/26 or 42/28. When I said I wanted a granny gear of 36, I'm referring to the large cog of the cassette, like a 12/36 Shimano or a 11/36 SRAM. The rear derailleur and the bottom bracket on the bike have both broken. I would like to go to STI style shifters and a 2X10 setup. I've heard that the SRAM gear (mountain and road combined) plays well with each other. I've got an SRAM X.7 front derailleur o the bike now.

that throws the FD cage to a single position .

As I see them (shop builds, dont own any)STI is a package,
the FD is designed to not contact the chain to the cage, until in the cross chain angles

so sticking to the set works OK, its the off label combinations that may have issues .

rear spacing between cassette cogs for a given "speed" set seems fairly consistant for Shimano and SRAM..

Give it a go and report Back.

BTW Patterson Metro uses a 28t chainring , overdrive planetary makes it a 45tooth equivalent,

no derailleur up front needed at all , shift is another cable (work with left brifter? IDK)

After a bit of Googling,it seems the newer SRAM MTB and road do play well together,but you might want to consider at least a triple up front. 42/11 isn't very high;I can easily spin that out on numerous hills around here. I'd suggest checking out Sheldon's gear calculator:

Plug in the numbers for your current setup,then what you're looking to convert to. If you use your current big ring much,you may find yourself frequently spinning out in those new configurations.

BTW,what happened with the BB? 3500 miles is nothing,you should be getting 2-3 times that easily.

I was about to post similar. You can run the SRAM right hand control and Apex WiFli RD, and 11-28, and a MTB triple front. Then there is no compatibility problem at the rear and you only need to figure out the front. And they tend to have 44-tooth top gears.
