Boardman Hybrid, wider tyres needed.

Hello all,
My first post here, so hello...!

I have a Chris Boardman Hybrid Halfords | Boardman Hybrid Comp Bike 2014

But i find it a little uncomfortable to ride on the roads around where i live (Manchester, UK), the roads here are poorly maintained to put it mildly, i also used to enjoy cycling on canal tow paths (cobbled stone), but on this bike thats out of the question,
the current tyres are 700c x 28, what i would like to know is would it be possible to just swap the tyres for a wider set (say 700c x 38) and keep the wheels, sorry if thats a noob question
and would it make a great deal of difference !?
I realise the max width of the tyre is limited by the frame/forks, especially at the rear, it narrows quite sharply, theres approx 9-10mm between the tyre wall and frame.

Thanks

Neil.

If you have 8-9mm all around the tires, it should be no problem to go up to about 40. Wheel maintenance will be more critical.

Worth noting, the Q&A on the site you linked to mentioned that the bike can handle up to 38 mm tires.

Along with frame clearance, you might want to check the width of your rims...

There is a chart on Sheldon Brown's tire sizing page that shows which tire widths your rims can handle, once you measure the inside width.
