New parts or new bike?

My current hybrid bike is a 2005 model Trek 7200. On the street, the pedaling effort on this bike is significantly greater than on my road bike. Will changing tires and swapping the front shocks for a solid fork make much difference, or is it time to buy a new hybrid? I leave the hybrid at my sons house in another city and we take 20-25 mile rides together and would like to increase our distances, but I think my bike is holding me back. I could take my road bike down there, but I prefer a hybrid for the mup's we ride.

A new hybrid probably isn't the answer. The biggest difference between a road bike and hybrid is the more upright position of the rider on the hybrid. A new road bike may be the answer instead of the hybrid.

New narrower, smoother tires may help on your old 7200. Shocks not so much. You might want to check the wheel, bottom bracket, and pedal bearings to make sure they aren't holding you back. Also double check that the brakes aren't dragging.

I had an '05 7200;it was my first commuter. Nothing short of stripping the bike to the bare frame and doing a complete rebuild will get it close to a road bike. However, swapping the crappy stock tires for something smoother/lighter,and swapping on a rigid fork will make a noticeable difference. Neither of these is an expensive upgrade,so if the bike fits you well and you like the ride,it's definitely worth it to put a little money into it rather than buying a whole new bike.
