2012-2013 Trek 8.4 and 8.5 DS Fork Recall

Did anyone else receive this and have any idea what the problem is? It bothers me that they are saying to stop riding it immediately. Wonder how long it will take to get the parts in.

    Dear Trek Consumer,
Thank you for your recent purchase of a Trek bicycle. Our records indicate you purchased one of the following models equipped with an SR Suntour NRX suspension fork (both standard and WSD models are affected):

    2011 Montare
    2011 Utopia
    2012 8.4 DS
    2012 8.5 DS
    2012 Neko SL
    2013 8.4 DS
    2013 8.5 DS
    2013 8.6 DS
    2013 Neko SL

A number of these bicycles were made with an SR Suntour suspension fork on which the fork dropouts can break. The fork is model NRX and has IS mounts. If a dropout breaks, the rider could lose control of the bicycle.

Your safety is very important to us. Therefore, Trek will replace the SR Suntour suspension fork on an affected bicycle with a different fork, an RST Vita, free of charge.

This letter contains important information regarding what to do next if you think you may have purchased one of these bicycles.

    AFFECTED MODELS
Only specific bicycles from model years 2011, 2012, and 2013 are affected. These bicycles may have serial numbers ending in “F,” “G,” or “H.” Your local retailer can assist you in determining if your specific fork is subject to the recall. The following pages show you how to identify the affected models.

DO NOT RIDE YOUR BICYCLE UNTIL THE FORK HAS BEEN REPLACED
If the fork breaks, you could be involved in a serious accident. Do not ride your bicycle until your Trek retailer has replaced the fork.

WHAT TREK WILL DO FOR OWNERS OF A RECALLED BICYCLE
If you own a bicycle that is affected by this recall, Trek will provide you—through your Trek retailer—a free replacement fork, including free installation. If you have any questions, please contact your retailer, or call Trek at the special recall hotline: 800.373.4594

THANK YOU FOR BUYING A TREK BICYCLE
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this problem might have caused you. We value you as a customer and want you to enjoy your Trek bicycle. We hope that after your Trek bicycle is repaired, you will continue to safely enjoy cycling.

This letter was prepared in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission. If you have questions about the information in this letter, please contact your Trek retailer.

There were 28 failures out of 120,000 ... And only two notable injuries. Personally I am not loosing sleep over "immediately stopping" to ride my bike.

See more discussion in "official Trek DS owners thread" on this topic.
