Basic maintenance questions for my Specialized Crosstrail Comp Disc.

    Specialized Crosstrail Comp Disc 2014

400 miles on the bike. Basic commuting and riding around colorado roads...

How do disc brake pads wear? Will I need to replace pads at some point? Is there a difference in pads?

How about a chain clearner? Worth it or a waste? Right now I lube every time or 2 that I ride and use a cloth to run the chain through and clean.
    Thanks

Park Tool has most of the info you need on their site:

Pad wear depends on many factors. How fast you ride, how steep your hills are,how much you weigh, how much cargo you carry, how dirty your riding conditions are, whether the pads are sintered metal or organic, etc, etc. On a very hilly commute,on a heavy bike, riding fast in all weather I used to get about a year out of my fronts and a little more out of the rears. YMWV. Just keep an eye on the pads, and replace when worn. Your hydros are self-adjusting.

Unless you're riding in dirty/sandy conditions,or riding in the rain a lot,you probably don't need to clean/lube your chain as much as you are. Just clean it when it looks dirty and lube it when it gets dry. Unless you're dirt riding or riding through winter conditions, you really won't need one of those chain cleaning contraptions,a rag and maybe a brush will do fine.

I don't know anything about disc brakes so I can't help there but as far as cleaning, degreasing and lube goes I do mine every 2 weeks which for me is about every 300 miles..

Here is my routine every 2 weeks:

    • Degrease and scrub the drive train (chain, cassette, crank ect) with Simple Green. Use different sized brushes and get the tight areas
    • Low pressure rinse the Simple Green off and make sure you get all the Simple Green off
    • Rinse bike down and wash bike with soapy water. Then rinse again to get all the soap residue off
    • Dry bike off
    • Lube the RD, FD and chain. Make sure to get all the small moving parts of the RD and the FD

Done! The entire process only takes me about 20 minutes.

In between this every 2 week scrubbing I generally wipe down and lube the chain after every 3rd ride (about every 100 miles for me). I use a dry lube so it wears off fast..
