Anyone seen, road, or own a 2015 Giant Fastroad CoMax 1 yet?

Having owned an SLR 1 in XL frame size and now having a CoMax 2 in the XL frame size I can assure everyone the CoMax 2 is lighter by three, possibly four pounds. It's a SUBSTANTIAL difference. My LBS owner and I were going to weigh them when I picked up the CoMax 2 but we forgot.

I've seen a few people on here voice that they think an all-carbon frame is NOT a good material for a hybrid. I take it you've had an opposite experience?

I have not ridden a "current" bike with a steel frame. My 30+ year old "classic" 10 speed bike has a steel frame and it rides like a dump truck. My frame of reference is my 2002 Jamis (6061 aluminum frame) and the Fastroad SLR 1 (also an aluminum frame, supposedly one step beyond 6061).
I thought the SLR 1 rode very well for a bike without any "suspension" however in the short amount of riding I have done on the CoMax 2 I have little doubt it rides better. I am trying to determine just how much better.
Personally I think composite is a better material for ANY TYPE of bike. As the owner of my LBS stated, composite frames "know where and how much to flex". I agree with that statement.

The manufacturer's statement makes perfect sense to me. The SLR tubeset is Giant's most advanced; it's pretty light. The design intentions for "Comax" do not include ultra lightweight, so if a Comax Fastroad 2 is 3-4 pounds lighter than a Fastroad SLR 1, the difference would have to come from components/wheelset/tires. But they are comparable, so I can't see where such a weight difference would come from?

Not according to Giant's own information: "CoMax framesets are up to 200 grams lighter than comparable aluminum framesets."

I read the comment on Giant's web site. As I stated earlier, I had a chance to weight both bikes at the same time but forgot. My initial reaction when I first lifted the CoMax was that it was substantially lighter. So shoot me because I guessed about the weight and I could be wrong. I am all for posting accurate information in forums but in this case I DON'T CARE.
What I care about is my own body weight and that I own a bike that I happen to think is ULTRA cool.

OK after our first rides on the CoMax 1's I have to say that my original option about disc brakes on a road/hybrid bike were WRONG. Wow at least with good juice brakes that is. These added to the 11 speed shifting make the price of admission all worth it to me. I have to say however, that the CoMax in stock form is a bit heavier than our Escaped RX Composites. But, for me a little ice cream and there goes any weight reduction from a lighter bike anyway.

A word from a friend tells me there's a great deal on a comax 2 about 2 hours drive from me. It's a size medium, which I'm thinking might be too small for a 6ft 2 guy. Anyone riding one now and could you let me know your height? I'd hate to kill 4 hours to find out it will never work.

Yes it is probably too small and what is the "great deal" you are talking about? Is it a 2015 or a 2016 bike? Why do you think it is a great deal?

I appreciate and value RickGr4's post most of the time but in this post and another post in which he berates the op, I think he is out of line. I read bike forums to hear opinions and learn facts. When he states "I can assure everyone the CoMax 2 is lighter by 3 or possibly 4 pounds" I would expect this to be somewhat factual, instead it was just his guess and he appears to be significantly off. He finally did admit he might be mistaken but then he went on to berate badger1 and 2702(in another post). The bottom line is some posters were concerned about bike weights, Rick Gr4 states what appears to be incorrect information, when challenged on that information, he berates the posters and says "I don't care" about bike weight. RickGr4, if bike weight is not important to you that's all you have to say. It's not necessary to berate others who challenge your incorrect information. No need to worry though, this is not a shooting offense.

How and where did I berate the OP???
Also, how do we know my info is truly incorrect? I admitted I guessed. I could be right. When I said "I don't care" that was not directed at anyone and the only reason I said that is I am not willing to take the time to weigh both bikes side by side.
Lastly, Badger1 (who I respect his posts for the most part) and 2702 (who seems to have a one track mind about bike weight) have been know to ruffle a feather or two and shake a few trees in this forum. So if I ruffled a few feathers it would appear I am not alone.
FYI, this morning I took my CoMax 2 out for the longest ride I have done so far this season. I think it is a great bike and I really like it. That is what really matters here...

Sorry, my mistake in saying "OP" I was actually referring to another post that 2702 made. I am interested in the weight difference between high end aluminum and carbon so if anyone has weighed the SLR and the Co Max 2. Could you please post it.

Well if I was obsessed with weight, my garage would not have a bike that weighs about 27pds would I? I like following the latest bikes that come out and weight is a big selling factor for new bikes, the bike makers all tout lightweight strong frames. Gr4 has no idea how much money it takes to go down 3 to 4 pds in hybrid bikes or road bikes, the price is thru the roof. Check out high end road bike that are 16 pds vs 20pds. Its pretty much BMW price vs Hyundai pricing. So when he goes on here where lots of newbies look for advice and pretty claims a 3 to 4 pound loss for 400 dollars ( SLR to Comax2 $$) I had to say something to offset bad info.
As for how much weight you saving SLR to Comax 2 its the same components just the frame is 200 grams lighter according to Giant's info.
I would be much more concerned about toe overlap with the Fastroad bikes than Weight difference between the models, its a rather short wheelbase, I prefer longer wheelbase bikes for a bit more comfort.

2702, what you seem to be missing here is even if the 2015 SLR 1 and 2016 CoMax 2 weighed exactly the same (they don't) the 2016 CoMax 2 is a superior bike in many ways. Sorry if that fact threatens you in some way.
I am 55 years old. I could easily loose 20lbs. Pure and simple, I bike for exercise and to work up a sweat. I like high tech toys. I think my new CoMax 2 qualifies as a high tech toy. I like it. Unlike you, I don't feel like I am competing with anybody.
2702, lets make a deal here. I don't like you. I don't see where you offer any positive contributions to this forum. You seem to enjoy antagonizing people and picking fights. Please stop commenting on my posts and I will not comment on yours. OK?

i) "weight" varies by size, and by components. If there's a component change mid-cycle, the weight will change; and
ii) people on places like Bike Forums will quibble/quarrel/work themselves and others into a lather over trivial differences between a manufacturer's claimed "weight" and something they came up with by standing on a bathroom scale and then claim 'false misrepresentation', attempt to seek to return a used bike or otherwise cause headaches for retailers and manufacturers over nothing.
Question 2: there's no "average weight" for a carbon fibre bicycle frame, let alone complete bike. All else being equal: somewhat lighter than steel, aluminum, or titanium.

I was at a LBS last week buying a new bike for my wife and the owner actually weight the two bikes that my wife likes on a scale. The difference was like 3 pound.
One of the customer was asking the owner if he sells bike by the pound now.

It was a 2015 Comax 2 for $1200, but it was too small. I did happen to see a Revolt1 that fit really nice but I didn't want to get caught up in the new bike euphoria that was setting in on me. I may go back though. I was pretty impressed with the Anyoads and Toughroads as well. I never really shopped Giant bikes before since there isn't a decent shop near me, but they were some sweet bikes for sure!

Well I haven't updated this thread in quite awhile so here goes. I placed orders for 2016 FastRoad CoMax 1's, a large for myself and a small for my wife at our LBS (Blue Run Bicycles in Dunnellon, FL).They have already shipped from the warehouse in CA and due in on the 30th. Haven't decided if we'll keep our present Escape RX Composites for travel bikes or sell them. They have to live off the back of our RV for 3 months each year. Oh well decisions, decisions.... Looking forward to the end of the month
Thanks in advance Jerry
