Car free since August, but completely illiterate about bikes and their maintenance
Hello!
I'm a grad student who is lucky enough to go to school in a very bike friendly town. I decided to forego a car, to save money and keep myself in shape, and have been doing a modest 3 mile commute since August. I ride a crappy craigslist Schwinn mountain bike, which has served me fine, but have been looking to acquire something a little lighter for the sunny summer Montana months. I'm hoping that visiting the forums might help me out with this, along with maintenance, as my poor bike has had over 700 miles put on it since I started and hasn't had as much as a tune up.
Glad to meet you all, and looking forward to keeping the car free lifestyle going as long as I can

Cheers and welcome.
You will find being able to do your own basic wrenching is very handy if your primary mode of transportation is bike.
