Hello Everyone - Why is everyone angry at me in Schaumburg, IL?
Hi,
I've moved here from Australia bringing my bike with me - unfortunately I was not ready for "Get on the damn sidewalk" shouted at me every mile. Is there some "Don't cycle on the road" law here that I'm missing?

welcome to the forums... you might post that question in the regional section... I do not know what the law is there...Here in the Houston Texas area it is against the law to ride your bike on the side walk...

Welcome to Bike Forums. Most places its against the law to ride on the sidewalk. Its just angry motorists who think only cars belong on the road. Stay safe.

Holy Jeebus, I'm sure you got quite a shock moving here. I'm in the western suburbs of Chicago and know well what you're experiencing. Schaumburg is even worse than my area, so you have my sympathy. Illinois law allows you to ride on the sidewalk (barring local prohibitions, such as in a business district in Chicago). But there is no requirement to do so whatsoever. The law in IL is pretty typical, all rights and responsibilities of a motor vehicle, FRAP except for substandard lane width (which most roads are), motorists are required to give 3 feet passing distance. You aren't doing anything wrong. But you are likely to get plenty of honking, comments, punish passes, etc. Traffic in Schaumburg is pretty crappy all the time so you've got lots of cranky people on the road. Don't let it get to you, and just be safe. Good luck.

Just make sure you're riding on the proper (right) side of the road.

Welcome to the forums, schaum. I'd really like to hear your comparison of the cycling experience in Australia to the American one. Sounds like you've really landed in one of the more extremely anti-bicyclist areas by your comments. Most places have a moderate amount of bicyclist hate but by moderate I mean maybe a negative encouter once every few months at most. Daily hate like you describe would be intolerable.
Stay safe.
