Old fart from OKLAHOMA...
Petite 237lbs RedNeck goes cycling...
almost 54yrs old, 5'11" when I suck my gut in but normally 5'10" when my gut hangs out.. my 36x32 Wranglers are get'n snug but not omg tight yet..
I bought a Kent 26" 6spd aluminum from Wally a few years ago & my then 14yr old fell in love with it & dang near wore it out..
I gotta new tire & a couple of new tubes fer it & fixing ta start riding it again,, this new tire has a smoother tread then what I had
I stopped riding cuz he was always adjusting the seat & instead of me re-adjusting to ride I left it,, my knees would start burning after 2-2.5 miles around our neighborhood...
my SteelShop job is 5miles away & never have road a bike to work,
although I used to ride 6-7miles in hood (when I adjusted seat)
I stopped smoking this last Jan 9th & have a good energy supply..
I'm not going "Green" but would like to maybe ride to work someday
I've currently got my eyeballs on a fat tire bike (neighbor had one & it looked cool) after what he sold it for I can tell that they are not in my price range..
my old Kent is fixing to transfor into a more comfortable riding bike (handlebars force me to lean over too far for me to be comfortable)
I feel I would enjoy a higher more swept back set of handle bars & doing my shopping for them now realizing that I'm going to change shifter cable also..
I'll post pics of bike transformation when I getta chance

Welcome to Bike Forums young man. You're still just a kid. Stop by the 50+ forum and say hello to the other old farts. I hang out there. I'll be 71 next month.
Why can't you afford the fat tire bike? Can you put a price on your health?
And riding to work is great fun and a fun way to get in some more exercise. I did it for 5 years when I lived in Atlanta.

I can prolly afford it but after taking another look at my old bike I figger I could fix her up to see if its a doable/practical thing..
I'm gonna hafta pack work clothes along with steeltoes, lunch along with electronics bag..
if it does workout good maybe I can leave several changes of work clothes at shop with spare steeltoes & not hafta carry as much to & fro...
I gotta quite of few things coming in next 2wks from internet deals for old bike,, this will give me plenty of time to get bike right & adjusted to my liking before spring gets here..
I dont see myself pedaling in the artic cold waves we have here in OK...

It is possible to ride in the colder temps, but the main problem we face here in OK is that the temps swing so much we don't get a real chance to acclimate.

Jake, come on over to the commuting forum. It's there to help you get ready for that first ride to work!!!!! A bit of advice----save your bucks for something other than a fatbike. As cool as they are the serve a specific two wheeled human powered need-----and that ain't riding to work!!!
You're not old......there's a surprising number of us here that are your age and above. I'm 14 months from retirement and haven't driven a car for almost two years. Lost 60 pounds with a bike and a food scale and am off of all blood pressure meds!!!
