Greetings From Texas
I have been a short-time lurker here for the past few weeks after I got the urge to get my trusty old bike going again. I bought my 1974 Motobecane grand Record at Chicago's famous (at least in Chicago) Turin Bicycle Co-Op back in 1975 after I got out of the USAF and decided it was time to return to school. I sold my Trusty Schwinn Continental and bought the Motobecane, being the most I could afford at the time. I rode it to school for four years and around the city off and on for a few years, but work, a child and everything else got in the way of riding.
I am in the process of retirement and decided that it is time to use my free time getting back in shape and to get the bike cleaned up and ready to go again. I'll post a photo tomorrow if it isn't raining The old ride is in pretty good shape for its age and I try to take care of my toys. Some new cables and housings, handlebar wrap and some new brake pads are about all I need to finish it up. I bought some new tires and tubes at REI the other day and will mount them after I finish the other details. I will get the bottom bracket and head tube serviced since I don't have the tools to the the TA crank off.
I enjoy seeing other's bikes and this is a fun way to spend time dreaming about finding a Paramount at a yard sale someday!
I am in the Texas Hill Country and not far from Austin and San Antonio. The roads are too hilly for me to ride until I get into shape, so I have some work to do!

Welcome to Bike Forums. If you're retiring then stop by the 50+ forum and say hello to the other old timers. I hang out there. I'm 71.

Hi Gerry, I'm just outside of Wimberley, home to all of the Exxon retirees from Houston!

Welcome back to cycling, it missed you.
When you start riding try this tip: If a pedal pops up, push it back down.
That'll get 'ya started.
Your spruce up on the that bike sounds great.
I would love to see you post a photo.
Ride, rest, repeat. Have fun.

Thanks guys! Gerry, I wish I was an Exxon annuitant! I'm still employed but will be retiring at the end of June.
Here's a few photos of my Motobecane Grand Record. It is almost all original except for the Campy seatpost I added years ago. I am going to have to find some brake lever hoods for those Universal 61 center-pulls and will wrap the bars with new cork tape when I get around to it. I bought this 1974 Grand Record on June 7th, 1975 to ride to my college classes and have ridden it on and off (mostly off) since then. I plan on posting in the Fifty Plus and C&V forums also and introduce myself over there too.
Thanks!

Which direction out of Wimberley do you live? I grew up there in town near the Wells Fargo then moved across the curvy bridge going out of town towards San Marcos in my early teens... great place!
