I used to be a competitive swimmer and runner in high school and my coach got me into triathlons. My first triathlon was raced on his old Specialized Allez. Followed shortly with my first 40 mile road race on the same bike. Liked it so much I started looking for my own road bike (enter the Voyageur). I rode for my University's road cycling club for a season in undergrad. My first race was a crit on the voyageur with downtube friction shifters (bad idea). My buddy lent me his old Trek (forget the model) for the rest of the season. During that time I was re-building the Voyageur with a 2x8 shimano drivetrain with brifters. I used the upgraded Voyageur for some road races that summer. That was the peak of my racing career and what sparked my biking enthusiasm. I have since come to enjoy casual evening/weekend rides with the wife.
I am in the process of rebuilding the Voyageur as a touring bike and my daily commuter. Might even put the downtube shifters or bar ends back on. The GT is still good for weekend rides/races. The Trek MTB is for fowl weather commuting and occasional trail rides with my brother. MTB riding and I don't get along. There can be a leaf on the trail and I will wreck hard on it.
I am also eying an old solid fork Specialized HardRock and contemplating the idea of turning into a 'gravel grinder.' We'll see. My garage is already nearing capacity, but tinkering on bikes is so much fun!
