Newbie Cyclist

Hi,

I've had this desire to go on an expedition at some point in my life and so had this great and totally not crazy idea to bike from Las Vegas up to Canada and around in about 6-9 months.

I know that's going to be a really easy time frame for most of you, but I want to detour a lot to see all of the cool attractions along the way and well, like the title says I'm a complete newbie cyclist. Like 'the last bike ride I enjoyed was when you had to pedal backwards to brake' kind of newbie cyclist. But my partner is a bit better and will be the one actually steering (tandem) and using the gears and whatnot, so I'm not completely insane.

So jeah, that's my reason for joining.

Welcome to Bike Forums. Touring on a tandem? You're braver than me.

Six to nine months puts you right in the beginning of the hot season for the southwest (Las Vegas and southern Utah) to the end of summer. It was 105F on June 6, the day I arrived in Las Vegas to live here. I remember it well. Thought I had landed in Hell compared to the beautiful Spring day I had interviewed for a job here. You can ride early in the morning but probably want to avoid mid-day and it will limit the number of hours you can ride. Carrying enough water to survive those temperatures is another problem.

@RonH+ Thanks, but I'm not convinced 'brave' is the word I would used at the moment. More like stubborn as hell as I've wanted to go on some sort of expedition for a few years now, but all I've been doing is around the world adventures. Haha.
@VegasTriker Will definitely keep track of the weather, but we'll be heading northwards so hopefully we'll miss the hottest parts, especially since we have to be up in Canada by (around) 22 June due to my partner only being able to get a 3 months visa. And we've hiked through Spain in the middle of summer, so definitely won't underestimate the need for lots of water again!
