Newbie from Oregon
New to BikeForums.net, though not new to cycling or to bike forums (lowercase) in general. Only recently learned about BikeForums, when I started noticing how many threads from these boards show up in my Google searches on random bike-related topics.
I'm a regular commuter (about 3x/week, year round) and mountain biker, and occasional road rider. My choice of equipment definitely puts me on the fringes of the bike community though! My current commute bike is a Surly Karate Monkey 29"er, with On-One Mungo moustache bars and hand-shaved slicks for commuting and occasional rides home through Portland's lovely Forest Park. I'm a major tinkerer when it comes to drivetrains, so this bike gets a 2x4 drivetrain in the dry months and a SRAM 3-speed disc(!) hub in the wet months. From Nov-Jan this bike also gets a studded tire on the front for those frosty mornings.
My mountain bike is a custom Vulture singlespeed 29"er, with On-One Mary handlebars, Thudbuster shockpost and a bright orange-with-green-raindrops paint job. I'm mostly an XC rider when it comes to mountain biking, which for me is a way to explore more of the outdoors with less knee pain than hiking. Besides riding in the we(s)tern Pacific NW forests, I also love exploring the jeep trails of the little-known (and very rarely-biked) SE Oregon desert: think Nevada without all the mining scars.
With a new baby, I'm having to limit my riding right now, but that will change once the little guy gets a little bigger.
