In transition

Only recently re-discovered cycling after a hiatus of about seven years - I was nearly killed by a bus when I first moved to San Francisco, and had too many encounters with stoned, angry, and rude drivers. It was a bit of a shock to me after having been a year-round cyclist in Boston. I figured people in Cali would be better at sharing the road.

Alas, I have come back with a vengeance. After only three months, I've already built up three bikes (a fixte, an all-rounder on an antique Super Course frame, and a Japanese lugged steel bike (a really beautiful metallic turquoise fuji team) for my girlfriend (who has NEVER ridden a road bike until now).

I've been rebuilding antique cars for the last fifteen years, but I've just finally gotten fed up with cars. I'm going to try and gradually eliminate them from my life and transition to being a cycle-ped. Still have a little ways to go, but I'll get there.

Meanwhile, I feel like I have a lot to learn about bike maintenance. I want to build wheels eventually. Maybe even build bikes for friends. We'll see.

I'll be scouring the forum for a few days before I start posting. So far I've been really impressed with the info available on it.

thanks
Brian

I kind of understand about the cars...you get immersed in endless details and timelines in a car resto.

Bikes are simple, clean, pure machines, and take up comparatively little room. And the variety of styles is enough to keep interest high.

Welcome and best of luck.

I would have thought you were also fed up with buses. Cars are incredibly useful, but it pains me to be paying insurance, registration etc costs while it is just sat on the driveway. These fixed costs should be included in the gas price so you would pay in proportion to your use. Good luck with your efforts to quit.
