'lo from Pune, India

'lo!
I'm in Pune, India and getting back to cycling after quite a few years. I'm looking to take it up as a semi-serious hobby. I was into distance running over the past year and a half, but got bored of it (the scenery moves too slowly!) and am looking for a change. I plan to stick to tarmac till I am ride-fit and then explore trails\hills in the region. Any advice on picking up an ATB (limited choices, I know), plus route\trail information, and\or links to previous relevant threads etc will be greatly appreciated. I'll also love to hook up with fellow riders here in Pune.
Look forward to meeting and learning from all you riding-gurus online and off.
Ride safe!

Hello - there are a couple of Indian forum members who can probably give you some help. My parents were married in Poona i9n 1927 (British army). Attached is a picture of my grandfather's house. Good luck with your search for a bike.

Yippie!!
Found someone from Pune at last!!
Hi Akula
I'm from Pune too. I've been searching for someone in the locality to ride and share my new hobby with.
Though I'm no athlete, I have built up enough stamina to cycle approx 8 to 10 Km at a stretch.
If you are looking for some decent MTBs check out www.firefoxbikes.com. A friend of mine is going for the Auto Expo in Delhi next week and has promised to have a proper look at the bikes before I decide to buy one. I can let you know his feedback as soon as he returns. Meanwhile you can have a look at bike shops in and around a place called 'Phadke Haud' in the city, though I don't think you will really like anything you see.
you can mail me at anu11des@yahoo.com or on the forum, if you need any help (not that I am an expert, but two heads can be better than one).
looking forward to lots of interaction with you!!!

Hey Andrew -
Great to hear from you! It'll be fascinating to see the picture of your grandparents house, if you send me any background\location information you have - I could go round and take some pics to pass on to you. Sort of a then and now. Coincidentally enough, my grandfather served with the British Army in Pune (it used to be Poona) too - though he was an engineer assigned to working on the telegraph network. And guess what - he met his future wife (my g'ma) here!

Cheers,
A

Heya Anirudh!
Great to hear from you. I'll likely be out of my depth even attempting 10Ks, the shape I'm in. But 4-6 weeks after I get my bike, I ought to be ride ready. I live in Pashan - be great to hook up with you for training runs etc if you're in my neighbourhood. I'm new to Pune and not too familiar with the geography - any landmarks or directions on how I can get to 'Phadke Haud'? Are there multiple vendors\dealers there, or do I have to look for a specefic shop? And do they sell safety kit - helmet, pads and the like? I saw some stuff at general sport stores - the quality was abysmal. I wouldn't count on those helmets to protect me in any accidnts, which - looking at the traffic here - are more than likely to happen.
I read in another thread that a guy in Kerala (Saji) has just picked up a Herc 6-speed, non-sus ATB. I am waiting for him to critique it before I make my choice. What do you ride?
I'll start a new thread in Riding partners for us to chat - don't want to annoy mods on my first days here.

Ride safe!

Sorry the file was too big to attach _ have now made smaller copies. I would be interested if you recognize any of the places.

phadke haud is near shaniwar wada, you'll have to take a bus to corporation..its closeby from there, just a couple of hundred meters, but you wont get firefox's there.

Hey AndrewP
The temple looks familiar, but can't make anything of the other photos. The river too looks much different now! Wish Pune were still like the photos.

Here are some sketches my mother did while on her honeymoon - I imagine they are not too far from Pune. Do you have any idea where?

The third sketch(black and white) looks like Sinhagad fort, 25 km to the southwest of Pune. Sorry I can't make much out of the other sketches though.
The earlier photo-the temple is either one at Alandi (30Km North- East) or the Omkareshwar temple in the heart of the city. I'll need to visit the places again to reconfirm.
It surprises me to see how well you have preserved such old sketches! Why don't you come down and visit Pune sometime with all the sketches, photographs and whatever else you have? It'll be fun searching and showing you around.

The photos were taken by my grandfather and I got them from my aunt a few years ago when she was about 90. She thought the temple was near Pune, so then Alandi would be most likely. She tought the river was called the Kirkee or something like that. My grandfather was in the engineers, but more concerned with railways. In the 1914-1918 war he was responsible for building a railway from Port Said in Egypt to Jerusalem.

The river is called the Mula (Moolaa) and is one of the two main rivers on which the early settlements of the city began. It passes through a suburb called Kirkee where the College of Military Engineering is located on one bank. The college has a museum of old railway engines and wagons etc. too!!!
I pass the place daily to come to my workplace.
So, the temple also has to be Alandi, which is on the banks of another river called the Indrayani (in - draa- yen -ee) river, which is nearby!
Try locating Pune in Maharashtra state of India (Western coast) on Google Search and I'm very sure you will find an arial view of all these places.

Hi akula,

I am from Pune and am a long distance cycling enthusiast. I even know a small bunch of people out here who are good company for long rides. But like everyone, I too am facing the problem of not having a suitable bike. I currently use my MACH 1 for all my commuting.
