Hello from -47 F windchill

Hi
Needless to say my bike is in my living room on a trainer. I know there are a few hardy souls who bike outdoors in the winter here in North Dakota but I am not one of them (thermometer was -20F when I went to bed last night).
After a 20 year hiatus I bought a Schwinn Sierra leisure bike and joined up with our bike shop's weekly rides (I thought they were going to be little tours around town - 20 miles later and still breathing I was hooked)
Last summer after asking the "pros" about cadence, hill climbing, shoes and clips, tires, one of them said "I think she is ready for a new bike."

I am not interested in racing but would like to get into bike touring. There are a couple offered in NoDak. A short one in June called bike the border and the major one in August called Candisc. My goal is to whet my teeth on bike the border and then try for Candisc.
My longest ride to date has been 29 miles at one time so 60-80 miles in a day seems rather intimidating.

BTW I ended up buying a Specialized Sequoia and for my needs I LOVE it!

Can I check out the over 50 forum if I turn 50 this year? AARP is already sending me info )

Excited to have found this site!

Yeh, I got AARP snail spam when I turned 50. I read a story by two ladies touring transcontinental. They said a train track ran alone their North Dakota road for several days. Engineers started recognizing them and tooting as they went by . For winter training there are some beautiful videos of great scenery taped at cycling speeds to watch while you spin. I trained once to the Grand Tetons then went there years later and rode the same road.

Not to worry. I'm 61 and did my first metric century(+) at 55. The + means I missed the last turn in the route and had gone more than 2 miles when I realized I was all alone. Turned around and found the arrow. Sixty-six miles at the end of the day.

Stay away from there. Too many old people hang around that place.

I have heard about the scenic videos but have been unable to find any. Does anyone know where they can be found?

www.bike-o-vision.com have a number of DVDs which certainly lessen the boredom of riding the rollers or trainer…

Welcome to the Forums. In no time at all you'll be surfing the Ice Biking threads comparing knobby patterns and stud counts! I have relatives in NoDak and my hat is off to you for riding up there in winter.
