Getting into the sport.....

Hey Guys and Gals..
I'm new here, but have been peeking every now and then.
I'm a newbie to the sport and am looking for some good advice.
I am from Ontario Canada and I want a new hobbie/passion and I think biking will fit the bill.
I will be buying my bike in the next couple of days.. It's between the Kona Kikapu or Dawg and Specialized or Trek... not sure of the modles.
I do have a concern.. I will be riding mostly cross-country and I would like to know about weight restrictions.. I know that might sound silly, but I'm a Paramedic and I work out quite a bit on and off the job.. I weigh 225-235ish... Is that too heavy for biking? I'm not looking to win any races, just ride for myself...
Any thoughts?
Thanks.....

No, it is not too heavy. Just start with a stong frame, MTB or Touring type. Then strong wheels like 32 to 36 spokes with solid rims and 700x28 or 700x32 (or 26x1,25 or 26x1.5) tires. I started last year at 220 lb and dropped to 195 in 5 months. Even so one day when I commuted to work I rode across out truck scales at 260 lb, body, bike, work cloths, and all. As a paramedic the police may even let you use the blue blinkie lights reserved for them . With your climate be ready to get studded tires next fall.
