Back to two wheels again! (in Portland, OR)

About five years ago I was riding a lot, but not having fun (my boyfreind was very bossy, and kept pushing me harder and harder).
After that, I slowed way down. Someone gave me a car, and I got REALLY lazy.

The car died in November, but I could not get enthused about shopping for another. When global warming made the front page of the Oregonian newspaper, I finally stopped fence-sitting, and decided to forego owning a car. I am now transitioning back into riding.

Today, I worked on my bike for two hours (Schwinn Letour mid-70's). She really started to fall apart during my period of neglect, but I feel good about working on her . I felt that I have finally met some supportive folks who will help me learn bikes. And my work on her is not entirely wasted, if I learn how to not abuse my next bike. I also own a Schwinn Traveller (bought as a spare, but never ridden since purchase.)

I have a third bike called a Mountain Eagle by Magna. Got it for free. Don't know anything about it. (Is it just a crummy department store bike?)

At this point, I am really overweight (obese, actually). I weigh around 250 and I am 5' 7" in height. I was thinking about health care recently, about how what we call health care isn't really caring for health, it is just managing illness. Well, maybe I can help my health as well as the planet's health by riding my bike.

Besides, there is no public transit to some places I want to access, so biking is a good option.

hi mary - i'm also from portland ore, and essentially car-less. I commuted most days to work by bicycle. Keep it up and keep on pedaling.

Back to two wheels again

Good for you, Mary! For a) losing that boyfriend b) finding yourself c) saving the planet and d) committing to radically improve your own health!

There's a gal here in Indy who started at 367 or some such figure and has lost well over 100 pounds. (Her hame was Mary, too!) Go for it!
