Hello from Vancouver
Just finished off the school year and decided to take the time to register. I've enjoyed oggling all the nice bike pics and reading some of the longer rants. I'm currently in the market to sell 2 of my bikes in order to buy one, which will still leave me with 2 bikes as I have 3 to begin....right. So, Im thinking of moving from my homade commuter mt. bike to a full fleged roadie. If I don't sink about $100 into the commuter, it'll become dangerous soon: Vancouver has lots of hills. any thoughts? I cover just under 90km/week and don't have a tonne of $$$
I commute North/South over the Vancouver land mass, so i hear you on the hills.
I'm presently riding a fixed gear converted Bianchi road bike that I threw together for about $500.
It sees about 500km a month, so I kept it simple to avoid maintenance.
My derailleured bikes required MUCH more work to keep in good operating condition.
I can't say much about buying new bikes.. but if you are looking to fix up your Mtn bike, try places like Our Community bikes, and Bike Works. They'll most likely have whatever you may need, and will sell it to you dirt cheap.
thanks for the 2cents lyle,
I'm kindof fascinated with the singlespeeds I see...I don't know how you manage some of the hills around here! my punk friend shane has/had one and he swore by it, but I don't think I'm ready to make that leap yet. I fully intend on putting my own road bike together, if I go that route, as I find it a fascinating and rewarding experience. the commuter I ride now was a $90 whole bike from 'Cheapskates' that I stripped down to the frame, sanded and repainted, and then put back together with a bunch of mods I had collected.
