Well, now that I've posted in a few other threads perhaps I should introduce myself here.
I've ridden bikes all my life in an urban setting. I grew up in Chicago, first riding department store bikes and then finally my last year there on a NOS '96 Specialized Rockhopper A1 FS that I loved very much and took with me to college in Troy, NY. I spent a few miserable years there, then moved on to Albany, NY. My Rockhopper died in March from old age (what do you expect, it's Al), so now I'm on a blinged-out Surly Steamroller. Chris King this, Campy that, so on and so forth. Lots of Salsa, too, carried over from my beloved Rockhopper. We're still getting to know each other, but I expect my relationship with my Surly to be a long and fulfilling one.
I'm a commuter and a recreational cyclist; I don't compete and don't expect ever to do so due to repeated knee injuries. But hey, I'm still having fun on my bike, so who needs racing!
