Hola from deep in the heart of Texas

Hi, everyone. Real quick introduction: I'm a 32 year old guy, born and raised in Austin, Texas. Just moved within five miles of downtown and decided, like many in my funky little neighborhood, to bike everywhere possible instead of driving. Got a 2006 Kona Fire Mountain bike a few months ago, and I swear the only places I drive are to and from work, and to friends' houses when I can't get someone to pick me up. Hehe...

Anyway, just started getting interested in road biking, too. Finished my first triathlon last weekend on a rented bike, and loved every minute of it (aside from the blazing Texas summer heat). So I think it's smart to get a bike of my own. That's how I found this place: the $700 Road Bike Thread is simply the best discussion of affordable roadies that I've found, and I use it a lot in window shopping.

Anyway, that didn't turn out to be a quick intro after all, huh?

Thanks for all the info, and keep up the great work!

Yeah, it appears to be a nice place to ride. I think Outside magazine just named A-town the runner up for best biking city in the U.S. Just wish there weren't so many ginormous oversized trucks screaming down the street.

Thanks, MsVicki. Quick update: now the proud owner of a formerly dirty, diseased, and thoroughly jacked up Trek 1000, now cleaned and very rideable. It's nothing wonderful by any stretch, but it was dirt cheap on Craig's and will get me through the next few months.

Gracias,

My wife is taking an audition for a position in the Austin Symphony later this month. I'm secretly crossing my fingers she gets the job. Of all the places she's mentioned audition for, I'd pick Austin above all the rest. (Born an raised Texan here too, but up in Dallas for the last 25 years).

Best of luck--really. I've traveled a lot, but no matter where I might move someday, I'm coming back here to die. LA is the only city I'd even consider in the US, if I could afford it--and ONLY near the beach. Ha!

Tell her good luck from A-town, and hope to see you on the streets someday.
