    Greetings From Michigan

Thought I might as well say hi, as this seems like a nice place to stick around. I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan, a town I have found to have a great cycling community and several good rides. Having biked since childhood like everyone, I recently renewed my interest after purchasing an R500 road bike and fixing it up. I used to ride frequently, but nothing like what I do now, an average of about fifteen miles a day. I'm not necessarily a strong or talented rider, but I do enjoy it. I like maintenance and mechanics about as much as riding, so I applied to a local bike shop.

I am currently working on converting an old Fuji "Juice Sparkler" (I had never heard of it either) into a fixed gear, like everybody else. But I'm not doing it because it's the cool thing to do nowadays, moreso because I like the simplicity of the modern bicycle design, stripped to its elements. Plus they are fun to ride.

I am also interested in web design, and have published a "humor" blog, This Week In Ryan's Pockets. So if anyone here needs any help, I'd be glad to offer it.

    Pleased to meet you!

Pleased to meet you too! I am also in A2. Small world. About to get pretty hectic around here, with all the students moving back in. I wont be biking or going near downtown/central campus for a while. Welcome to BF, hope you enjoy your stay!

Welcome Ryan! I'm originally from East Lansing, MI... your nemesis, so to speak. I love the Ann Arbor area too, though. Now I live in the Washington DC suburbs, though I frequently miss the small-town midwest life. I'm a big bike dork, with a small collection of fixed-up road bikes. I am also converting a Fuji to fixed gear right now (mine's an Allegro). Gonna go home and build me some wheels tonight. What's the Juice Sparkler look like??

Enjoy the forums! A fabulous source of inspiration and procrastination

Mud- I'm lucky because I will be out of town for the next week, thereby missing all of the student move-in/orientation activities. You're right to avoid the downtown area, it's a madhouse during those days.

Mox- GO BLUE! Yeah, those Fuji's are fun. Mine was this slightly faded red, almost a salmon color but a bit brighter. Had a white fork/stem. The finish was functional, but I removed all the braze-ons (about a pound worth ), so I am going to get it powder coated tomorrow.. I'm thinking a very dark blue or green, then painting the fillet (EDIT: NOT fillet brazes, just normal ones) brazes black, so there's some contrast in certain lights, but generally looks clean. As for the bike geometry/type, it's a very standard 70's/80's road bike, horizontal dropouts, steel frame, fillet brazes.

Funny you should mention wheels, I ordered a handbuilt track set, although I later realized that my hub was a was a thread-on freewheel type so I could have used it (albeit without a lockring) as my hub, and just gotten new rims. So Maybe I wasted money. Probably not, because I have no experience building wheels.

Wow, you've got a fillet-brazed frame? Sexy! I thought only Schwinn made those, I've never heard of a fillet-brazed Fuji. Building fixed gear wheels is a lot of fun. You made the right choice, buying a new wheel rather than using a suicide hub. A proper track flip-flop hub is a lot safer.

Oh sorry, it seems I got my terms mixed up. They're just normal brazes, not filed down. Still pretty sexy though, bike companies used to like to make all these swoops and points in them, and mine has plenty.

Oh, you mean LUGS (socket-looking thingies). Fillet brazing is actually a fairly rare way to assemble a frame, that was used on some high-quality Schwinns till the 70s.

But yeah, lugged steel frames are the best! I actually wrote a wikipedia article on them recently, http://wikipedia.org/wiki/Lugged_steel

Yeah, actually I was just about to edit that in. Very nice entry, that picture of the Hetchins frame is incredible.

I live in Oakland county, but I've worked a lot in Ann Arbor. Nice city, I just wish I could find my way around there better.
