Hello from Arkansas
Good afternoon.
I'm an out of shape, overweight, rank beginner, riding a Trek 4300 (with the original platform pedals that came with the bike) around the neighborhood and on a local bike path along the Arkansas River on the weekends when I get time. I did a paper route off of a single speed Huffy beater through Jr. High and High School, so I was in decent shape then, but that was long ago and I obviously wasn't using good technique.
I've been lurking for a few weeks and am just hoping to learn a little big about how to get into respectable shape.

I have the same bike. It is a trusty steed (except that I bent the derailleur hanger and derailleur and haven't fixed it yet)
Welcome aboard and have a great time riding.

Yeah, I've read a lot of good reviews on the 4300 as a starter bike. It's definitely MUCH nicer than the Huffy Street Machine I rode growing up
So far so good for me on the 4300.

To get into shape, get on the bike and ride. If you find a friend to ride with you, and who is a bit fitter than you, you will get into shape a lot faster. Make sure you enjoy the rides, then you will continue.

Ten years. I pretty much quit riding in college since I couldn't afford a real bike and wasn't about to ride my Huffy Street Machine all over campus
I'm pretty much starting form square one. I've been riding two to three times a week for the last month or so and am hoping to start ramping that up a bit. My biggest fight now is that I'm not at all a morning person and I know I'm going to start running out of daylight after work in the next month or so. Oh well...I'll figure a way to get out of bed somehow. If worst comes to worst, I got a trainer.
I've actually got someone I can potentially ride with eventually, but I'll need to be in better shape to keep up. I've got some local clubs that do rides, but I'd need to be able to sustain 15mph. So, I need to workout awhile to be able to keep up with the big kids.
