West of Gettysburg

Hello to all,
Dave here. 47 years old. Chambersburg is about 25 miles West of Gettysburg.

I returned to cycling in May 2004 after many unhealthy years off. I road extensively as a car-free cycling commuter and roadie in my twenties on a Centurion.

My current main ride is a 58 cm Rivendell Rambouillet. It is equipped with Riv's stock Shimano/Nitto mix, though I had the wheels re-built with Velocity Aeroheads. I'm currently using Kenda's excellent 700 x 23 Kaliente tires.

I also have a mid-80s vintage Schwinn Super Sport, partially modernized.

Regards,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Welcome to Bike Forums. I'm your age, and returned to cycling about a month or two before you did. I've drooled over a Rambouillet before. I'm riding older machines - at least for the time being. Check my profile. The season is sort of winding down, but let me know if you want to go for a ride sometime.

Regards,

John

Thanks for the offer John! I should tell you that you are much more advanced than me. My training rides are 25 - 35 miles and my longest ride thus far is Chambersburg to Gettysburg, round trip--about 50 miles on route 30. I did it last year in over 4 hours and this year in something over 3. I could have stretched it to a Metric Century this year, but that probably would have been my limit.

I actually thought I was a fairly good cyclist until reading this forum. Now I know that I'm still just a guy on a bike with a tremendous amount to learn. My body needs much more conditioning, despite the vascularity crawling up my shins.

The Rambouillet is a good bike. Solid, stable and comfortable; but heavy-ish and a bit too much on the plush side. Expensive--not sure if I would do it again....probably would. Doesn't impress other cyclists much. Not terribly worried about that, however.
