Howdy!

Well, what's to say after being introduced with "the truth" being told about me? (See the April Fools post on the General Discussion Board.) I am a novice cyclist, planning on buying my first road bike in the near future. Currently on a comfort bike and finding it anything but comfortable. I am a nurse, about to graduate with a master's degree (if all goes well and the thesis committee sees fit to give their approval), a mom and a wife. My husband has been riding for about a year and is in the best shape since we were dating (15 years ago!). I am looking forward to cycling as a form of exercise, travel, and a family activity. Our son is 9 going on 10 and said of his first 10 mile organized ride, when passed by someone in a US Postal jersey: "I just wanna say three words to US Postal. On your left!" So I need to get up to speed in order to keep up with these two guys.
Off to go read more threads.

I'm in Pearland. No road bike shop. Although we do have a off-road bike shop that seems to do a brisk business. And no Cycling clubs near here (as found on the Bike Barn web page). But, there are still some rural areas to ride in. T.

Hiya Tberi... Hope you stick around and enjoy the place.
They aren't normally that rude to new people.... Usually they're much worse

TBeri -

How far is the Bike Barn Clear Lake location from you?

Our club rides(Space City Cycling Club) leave from there at 8am on Saturdays. (Several groups from "cruiser" on up.

There are also Sunday rides at 8am, but there is not always a cruiser group.

Mothers day weekend the schedule will change to 7:30. Great club - I actually drive 30 miles to ride with them as do some others. May want to give it a try. Club rides may have rather low attendance on 4/12&13 and the weekend after. *MS150 and Easter Hill Country Tour*

Howdy (which is the official greeting of Texas) TBeri.

Welcome! I used to live out in San Antonio and loved riding out there. My sister is a BS/RN and her husband is working on his. They both ride. Your son sounds really cool - I like the "on your left" comment.

Zack

Thanks to all for the welcomes.
PCSanity, I'm about 30 miles but at least 45 minutes from the Bike Barn Clear Lake. I plan to start out riding 10 - 15 mile rides near home soon after the MS 150. I'm the spouse's SAG support and am working on the final aspects of my degree so my starting in cycling is delayed a bit. Should be looking for groups to ride with about late April. Maybe the Easter weekend.
When it gets closer I'll post a request for information on local rides.
Thanks again to all for the Welcome, T.

Hi TBeri,

Wecome Aboard! My wife and I are also fairly new bike forum members and we live in the Humble area, so we aren't too terribly far from you. (OK, well, it's a pretty good distance by bicycle, I suppose.)

Welcome to BF from another Texan. I go down to Richmond about once every month or so and ride out by Fulshire.

To the other Houstonians...Are they planning the Katy Flatland this year? I've checked the website a few times only last years info.

Scubagirl, I think they are doing a Flatlands, but don't know much about it. Outa my league at this point. But the spouse has mentioned it. Next is something called the Beauty and the Beast. Think I'll be support again for that one.

While 10,000 riders (an awesome sight!) rode from Houston to Austin in two days, I did a total of 24 miles up and down a couple of hills on the road between Fayetteville and La Grange. Two days of twelve miles each day. In solidarity with my real riders. First hills ever. Woo Hoo!

Have to say riding language is taking over my speech patterns. In the fog going back toward La Grange after dropping off my riders Saturday, I took turns "pulling" the line of cars. And I found myself telling other cars "on your left" as I passed. But the funniest was my spouse today on our drive back to home. At a road construction site he noted "Slowing" loudly.

All ya'll ride well,
Teri

Once my husband was "Drafting" a civic or something small in our F-150, oh wait everyone else calls that tailgating! We were planning "Beauty & the Beast" I havent been on a bike for a month. I'd been doing so well, too much going on right now. Maybe we will make it out to Tyler for that next weekend. I couldn't handle "the beast" now maybe 25 or 40 if we can go.

Scubagirl - some details of the Flatlands is on the NWCC web page: https://www.northwestcyclingclub.com/
We'll have to see what kind of shape I'm in closer to the date. I know I'm support/spectator only for the ShinerBash. Too far too soon. Will go for about 14 miles in the a.m. Took three days off the bike for work and other life hassles.

Sandra, Where in TX are you? Anywhere near south of Houston?
