Umm.. I'm a Private in the US Army, currently stationed in South Korea enjoying the bone chilling cold and also enjoying my time on my bicycle. Ya see over here Sgt's and below can't have vehicles so for those of us who hate walking. Well we ride our bikes, weither it's hot n' muggy or a good ole' blizzard is blowing. Anyway my history is probably like everyone else's, but I'll continue because I might forget someday, so it'll be good to have this to remember.
Of course I've always had a bike around and much of my childhood was spent riding threw the woods, jumping home made ramps, really I would do anything to be on my bike. So come 6th grade I took up BMX and did that until I dropped out of high school. After that "bump in the road" I started riding a Schwinn Varsity in order to stay in shape and loose some of that keg I had growing just above my belt. After a couple of months riding the Varsity and getting my brother "hooked" I jumped in my VW bus and headed for a cross country trip from Georgia (my home state) to Chicago, IL then to Santa Monica, CA and back again. The whole time keeping my Varsity close by. Anyway I joined the Army for financial reasons and now I'm starting to get back into the bicycling thing and figured it would be best to start with some help. Anyway this looks like a great site with a lot of knowledgeable people and it'll be nice getting to know some of ya'll.

Hello Brian, it sounds as if you have led an eventful life. But at least you stuck with the bikes, that's good. Don't worry, your intro's not as long as some!

Good to hear a report from the front lines.
I was in the 1st Gulf War. I've always been in favor of Military Bikes. Before I joined the Navy, I had built a Kevlar fairing for a bicycle/electric moped. Kevlar, of course , is a bullet-proof material, so I took the bike to my air base in Florida. I experimented with camoflage to make the bike invisible. One fine day, I was called to do some Shore Patrol duty (or SP, same as MP).
Seems some Cubans were coming ashore down by Daytona. Well, I pressed the bike into service, and since it floats (it's amphipious ) I was able to catch one of the Cubans while he was still swimming, and I held him long enough for some Marines to come and pick him up in a Zodiac (inflatable motor-boat).
Here's a pic of the bike, in camoflage:
Under the "wet-foot law", the Cuban man was legally taken to a Destroyer that was waiting two miles off-shore, because he was still swimming and not wading, when I caught him.
However, someone complained that I was using an "Experimental Weapon", which is not legal under the Geneva Convention. So I never did it again.

East hill, Yeah my life's had it's events and I can't wait to have some more. Infact it seems everyone leaving Korea gets to go to Iraq, so that should be a wild experience! But I'm sure even in Iraq I'll stick with my biking addiction >
hotbike, Thats a crazy looking machine there! I can't imagine what the Cuban thought when he saw you! Anyway Korea is no way the front line, we're more of a vacation destination than a military post

Yipes, was there in 1952/53. Do recall the cold: 40 below zero standing guard on the flightline in Osan (K-55) with guerillas popping of their weapons.
Seoul then was still bombed out but hear it's a real fine megalopolis now.
Enjoy the ride and don't hit any mamasans or papasans and eat some kimchee!
