Greeting From Wilmington DE

Hello From Wilmington Delaware.

My first post here. I am very interested in learning about road biking and particularly long distance biking. I have a dream of circumnavigating the US via road bike and would like to learn what type of bike I should purchase.

In July 2005, I completed section backpacking the 2,167 mile Appalachian Trail. It was a marvelous experience and took 5 years to complete. I have significant backpacking experience and loved meeting people in small towns on the east coast. These were towns you would never see and people you would never meet unless you got way off the beaten path and purposefully met them. I love this experience and it renewed my faith in people.

I would like to explore the US in a similar fashion - meeting people in small towns across the US. My dream is to bike during the day and sleep in my tent at night - so this would be a self supported trip. I would also not be doing this in a single trip, rather would do in several sections.

What I would like to get out of this forum is:
1 - understanding of the type of bike I should buy (am also interested in doing Olympic distance tri's)
2 - how to learn to repair my road bike
3 - how would I go about planning a trip like that (what roads/routes)
4 - better understanding of the cycling community
5 - how should I train
6 - meet people and develop some relationships

Peace be with you and I look forward to meeting you

Welcome to BF! Be sure to check out the "Long Distance Cycling" thread, "Bicycle Mechanics" thread, "Training and Nutrition" thread, and "Foo" thread. If you think you can handle that last one.

welcome!

check out South Jersey Wheelmen or the Clay Club (De?) for rides or links to info. Adventure Cycling.org is another link to several levels of touring info.

SJW has "Get Ready Metric" in May, a good generic starter to road riding for the season! this starts in May (5/07), at Fort Mott, nj (2 miles from salem, 10 miles from Wilmington), a good practice for a tour!
bf can offer much more info, but will need more specifics on your idea of tour distances, time, level, etc.

are you going x-USA, around the block, what are your specific goals?

good luck, and again, Welcome!
