yet another Denver-area commuter

Hi, all. I've been fair-weather bike-commuting to work since about September (about 5 miles each way). Happily, my definition of "fair weather" has expanded to include pretty much anything above 20 degrees F, without stuff falling from the sky (and without outrageous amounts of ice on the roads).

I've been mostly lurking here for a while... I want to give a big "thank you" to the fine folks on the Total Geekiness thread. With their advice and R&D, I can now actually see the road at night (20W energy-saver halogen up front), and I get a lot more room from cars (Velleman amber strobe out back, plus my previous blinkies). And to the Commuting forum in general, for providing a bit of extra motivation and peer pressure.

Oddly enough, a bunch of my friends have been calling me "phred" for the last 15 years or so (I was in school, there were too many "David"s in my class, somebody started handing out nicknames), long before I ever knew what a "Fred" was in biking terms. I'm doing my best to Fred it up, though; the aforementioned lights, plus now panniers, mirror, and scads of reflective tape. Fenders next, and then I should be all set.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi, and thanks for the information and inspiration.

Hello phred000, it's always gratifying to know that someone has learned a few tips from the forums, and even more gratifying to know that you've put the information to good use.

Welcome to BF!
