There are (possibly) hundreds of threads on the very subject. I think there's a sticky somewhere in the Road Cycling forum if I'm not mistaken.

How much can you afford?
Do you foresee yourself racing/triathlon/ ? in the future?

And then we can start the Shimano/Campagnolo debate after that .

Welcome to Puget sound. We're where everyone else would like to ride (Kitsap), and you're close enough to enjoy. What bike to get? Way too subjective. I seem to have voted for the Several option. You get on it/them and ride. Most bike shops understand and I cannot think of any lbs in the area that doesn't do a very good job for the customer.

looking to spend under $1500

I am looking at the Fezzari Catania , but I am making a mistake buying online without testing or sitting on the bike for propper fitting ?
Do you need a triple crank for getting up steep hills ?
