I signed on here in December and made my first couple of posts in the folding bikes forum this past week.
I've been cycling for about 40 years and somewhat over 200,000 miles, but am slowing down a bit lately. My current commute between Watertown and Cambridge is only 3 to 5 miles each way depending on the route and I tend to do it in a leisurely fashion, usually on my 1975 "electro-forged" Schwinn which has a huge Wald basket on the back.
My other bikes include a 1976 custom built Jim Redcay, a 6 year-old custom PBW folder with full suspension and Rohloff and Schmidt hubs, and my latest and quirkiest acquisition, a Mobiky.
I have special interest in hub gears, and hub generators for lighting. I've had no deraillers on my bikes since the PBW replaced my older touring bike in 2001. My sportiest bike, the Redcay, which I rode as a fixed gear for a few years in the 90's, now has a 1951 Sturmey Archer AM 3-speed hub. I started using Sturmey Archer dynohubs in the early 80's, and now have 2 Schmidt SON hubs after giving away my oldest one, and a Shimano Nexus NX-30 on the old Schwinn.
My other hobby is competing in Scrabble tournaments, and when I was doing more long distance cycling I would use tournaments as my cycling destinations. My transcontinental ride in 1987 featured numerous Scrabble stops along the way.
Special note to East Hill: My mother was from Lancashire (Lytham).
