Looking to build a commuter

Greetings! I have been riding since I can remember and am really getting back in to the swing of things but I have a nagging question below. Thanks for the great forum!

I had a horrible accident with my beautiful Cannondale Road bike (Garage met Bike on Car) and now I have a great set of Dura-Ace 9 spd components I want to use to build up a strong commuter bike. The Frame I have and want to use in a 1996 or so GT Timberline (my first bike, I'm a little attached). I am wondering if this is something I can do or am I going to need to purchase a different frame set to build up the commuter. I have my mtn and Road bikes set up and running but I want something I can mount fenders and lights on. to be as safe as I can riding in the city. Any help or suggestions would be great.

Thanks!
