Another newbie from the Bay Area

    Hi all,

I recently got back into bicycling after a looooooong hiatus. The last bicycle I seriously put mileage on was my old Schwinn Traveler when I was in H.S., and I'm 33 now.

Last fall I picked up a Univega 12 speed roadbike at the thrift store in nearly perfect condition for $20.00, and started bicycling back and forth to school twice a week - about 35 miles a week, plus weekend pleasure rides.

I've begun restoring older bikes to working condition as a hobby. My girlfriend currently has an early '80's-era Schwinn 10 ladies roadbike that I fixed up for her, and a mid-'70's ladies 5 speed comfort bike from JC Penney that was literally a non-rolling wreck when I got it for $1.50. the Schwinn she rides at work back and forth between the train station and work, and the comfort bike is her at-home bike.

Currently I'm restoring an old cruiser bike of ABSOLUTELY indeterminate origin to excellent working and cosmetic condition for a friend of mine. As near as the people that I know can determine, it's possibly a custom built frame, or a very small manufacturer, and it dates from sometime in the late '40's to the early 50's. In partial trade for the work, he gave me a 1960 ladies Royce Union 3 speed which will be my next project for my GF.

Thank you very much for your welcome...

There's something very satisfying about taking a rolling wreck and making it work again... There's something in making an old piece of well designed machinery perform to its function again. Bikes are almost deathless, as long as somebody cares, they can be made to work again.

My Univega is 20 years old plus or minus, and it's a damned good bicycle. Over Christmas my little brother and I went for an 20 mile ride together, and I'm 10 years older'n he is... his Y2K Giant OCR1 is a great bike, but I hung with him through the entire ride, and the next day, he wanted to try it out, cuz his oldass brother had dogged him on it.
