Bike Engineering

Hello from the University of Washington.

I currently researching bicycle frames with a group of mechanical engineering students. It would really help us out if we could pinpoint the exact kind of steel that is used in bicycles. We already have researched and tested carbon fiber and aluminum 6061. We already went ahead and tested Stainless steel 316 (rare in bikes) and mild steel 1018 (not sure if used in bikes).

If any of you can refer me to a website or tell me what SPECIFIC kind of steel(s) is/are used in bikes, it would really speed things up.

Thanks

Check out the various steel threads in the Classic and Vintage forum. We've got a gazillion of them! Do a search for 'steel' and restrict the search to the C & V forum.

Or, better, you can run a search for such things as "Reynolds" and restrict to C & V. If you ask nicely someone will point you in the right direction. There are a lot of different steels used in bikes though.

Welcome to BF!
