New to the forum and biking; I have some questions!

Hey guys,

My name is Dan Gessler, 20 years old and currently studying business at Virginia Tech. I've hardly ever biked in my life except for when I was very young, and haven't stepped on a bike for the past 5 years or so at least. For the past year though, I've been exercising everyday, and the idea of biking seems like so much fun.

My main question here is will a person like me make use of the benefits of getting an expensive mountain bike over a cheaper one? Someone I know is selling at 2005 Jamis Dakota AL (brand new) for $550. Also, is getting a mountain bike probably the right choice? I'll probably be doing some commuting to school, and possibly some trail biking for exercise.

Hello Dan--if you even think that you will continue to ride a bike--yes, it would be a good idea to get the upgraded model. If you aren't quite certain, perhaps not. Does it fit you properly? Have you checked out fit at a local bike shop? Mountain bikes are perfectly acceptable for commuting and trail riding, but the knobby tyres can make you slow on the road if you discover that you really like road cycling (the tyres can be changed out for slicks, though, making it a bit easier).

Welcome to BF!
