I'm Nick

I'm from Rochester, Minnesota. I ride road and mountain bike. I've been riding bike as a form of transportation since I was about six. I'm seventeen now, so it's been about 13 years since I first got rid of my training wheels when I was four. I ride a 1999 Schwinn Super Sport and am buying a new mountain bike soon. It's down to a few bikes. This will replace my 2005 Raleigh M80. Next fall I'll be attending Iowa State and will join their cycling club/team. Hopefully I'll do well there.

Hello nruntsch, don't forget to check into the Great Lakes regional forum as well. What kind of major do you have in mind?

Welcome to BF!

For those of us who are not materials engineers--what do they do, and can it be applied to bicycles?

People with the major do a number of different things - it's not a set job. Usually big manufacturing companies have a couple materials engineers. They decide what materials would be the best for whatever product. If there is some sort of problem, they resolve it. So this can really apply to the building of bicycles.

It does sound as if you could put that major to some good use...by the way, if you have the time and inclination, perhaps you could do the Classic & Vintage forum a favour, and put up photos of the Takara Tribute.

I don't think I've ever seen one...
