A Clyde, with a bad knee and a wife who hates bikes
Besides having those three strikes against me, I love to ride. I really love to take what hills I can when the knee behaves. Fond memories flow, those of the Univega which carried me 20 miles to the beach every weekend as a child. It was those memories that drove me to save up to get the bike last year.
The good news is that by living here on the San Francisco Bay peninsula I have all the hills I want to ride. The flip side is there are no safe areas to ride flat. They are all full of cars.
I am obese, less so than before I got my race bike last year. Hopefully, even less once I get to take my commute/touring bike out.
Bikes:
Race (this means fun bike, I don't actually race): Trek 5200 58cm , essentially stock.
Commute/Touring (this is a work bike): Novara Randonee 55CM, ESGE kick stand added. Currently testing a B17.
The physical terrorists I see for my knee tell me I can't take the hill home from work everyday. They tell me that the 700feet of total climb in 3 miles is stressful. I feel the exact opposite, I feel relieved! (Yes, I know them mean stress on my knee you hush).
The Randonee was initially part band aid and part monetary relief. The plan was to buy a Surly LHT complete. However, I think Surly made one, maybe two, in the 54-60 cm sizes and they sold out instantly. I don't mean to blame them entirely. I too errored by trying to get one of the local shops to order one but they all wanted to sell their brands touring bike. (Love my trek but I don't love the 520).
Now the plan is to buy a LHT complete online and pass the Randonee to a buddy so he can try touring with me. (After swapping the brifters over)
I have been lurking here for months and months and I decided to sign on to participate in some of the discussions.
To all the locals, I will see you on Canada(put a tilde over the n)!

i see you don't like your medical professionals. How can someone hate bikes?
they help keep you in shape, they are fun to ride/build, the are expensive but a hell of a lot cheaper than a car, infact cheaper than the gas you buy for your car without the car. etc.
Why does she hate bikes.

I love my medical professionals, thats why they get a cute nickname. Have them provide "Manual stimulation" to your IT band! They keep me riding, of course I love them.
I am working on her. Her biggest complaint is a lack of safe spaces for adults to ride two or three wide, so you can chat and relax. I can't argue there.
