Introducing myself

Hi all

My name is Dave, I am 30 years old and have just returned to cycling for the first time in 20 years since i was at school. I am married to Alison, and have two fantastic boys Taylor (5) and Charlie (2). I am a train driver. We live in Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, UK.

I started cycling almost two weeks ago, and weighed in at 23st5lb. As a train driver i live a VERY sedentary life, and because of shift work always feel too tired to do any exercise outside of work.

I decided to get off my train home one stop earlier and cycle home from there - it is 3 miles. I did that for a couple of weeks, and when i felt fitter I got off two stations earlier - that is a journey of 5.5 miles. I have done that 3 times so far and still find it very hard work. As my fitness improves and weight reduces i will get off at earlier stations until eventually i can do the entire journey each night which is about 11 miles.

I'll pop in from time to time to let you know how it is going, and what my weight is (my second weigh in will be this Monday). Wish me luck!

Hello Dave, I don't think I've ever seen another member from the Isle of Sheppey...you're doing something wonderful for yourself and your family by getting out and getting that exercise. It will make you feel better about yourself, and the people around you too.

Good luck with the slimming, and don't forget to visit the Clydesdales forum--there are some inspiring stories there, and the members in that forum are very supportive .

Welcome to BF!

You are in a good location to see the first stage of the Tour de France this year. Is this included in your plans? With a weight over 300 lb you should visit the Clydesdale section of the forums. What sort of bike are you riding, and have you got an extra strength rear wheel?

Thanks for the warm welcome. I have made myself known on the Clydesdale thread. I do indeed intend to take the family to watch part of the tour de france, as it passes by where i am based for work. I bought myself a Carrera Kraken, as it seemed the strongest frame/wheels/etc i could get for the money i had. I am going more for miles than speed at the moment. Once i have lost enough weight and am fit enough i will trade up for a roadier bike - keepinjg the Kraken for offroad fun on my days off.

You are a lucky fellow to be in such a position to watch the TdF...try to get photos for us if you can.
