Vintage rider on vintage bike
I'm 50 and used to just about live on my metallic green Schwinn back in the early 70's. Haven't ridden in years and started looking for a bike - they were all either too expensive or way too cheap looking. I remembered how my old Schwinn was in-destructibe, so I stared looking for an old one. Also started to look at this site. What a wealth of information provided by seemingly nice people. Well, I snagged a mid-80's World Sport tonight off craigslist cleveland for $25! Rode around for 3 hours tonight like a 12 year-old again. She's a sweet ride! Needs new tires but everything works. Reading a lot of the posts showed me I got a pretty decent deal. I'll be visiting the site often now as I'll start to make her even sweeter! Might even try to find one for the wife now.

Welcome! Great deal you got there.
Come visit Fifty + forum, you'll enjoy yourself there, more of us who got back to riding after many years away. |
Great deal, indeed. Don't know much about Schwinn, but I scored a $25 World last summer (that is now a fixed gear), but I have yet to put 3 hours of continuous riding on it. Well done. and welcome!

Hello FallsJohn, with that kind of introduction it should be easy to lure you over to the Classic & Vintage forum, where we live and breath vintage bikes. There are more than a few admirers of Schwinns who share your affection for your World Sport. Don't forget photos! Are you going to get your wife a mixte to go along with yours?
Welcome to BF! East Hill |

Vintage Welcome
Thanks for the welcome. I'll have to get one of the kids to show me how to include a picture of the new old World Sport. And yes, I'll be on the Classic and Vintage forum a lot. Not knowing brands at all yet, what would be the best road tire for the least amount of money? Nashbar and Performance seem to have some good deals. By the way I couldn't find any indentifying numbers but it has 4130 Cromoly Double Butted Tubes, Shimano Shifters, Aray Rims, and Sugino Cranks. I'm figuring mid-80's. Much lighter than my old Schwinn which I'll assume had a steel frame. Has a wierd lookin' saddle that I'll replace. My butt's still sore from last night's ride. Wheels spin true. Brakes work but I wouldn't want to have to stop suddenly or at the bottom of a huge hill. I'll have to work on those too. I may post the tire quesion in the other firum as well. Thanks again!

We'll look forward to seeing you in C & V, and answer your questions more fully over there. East Hill |
Hi Fallsjohn, I'm new here too and I know very well what you say about a sore butt! Unfortunately this will happen no matter what saddle you've got!. It will be very tender for the first few minutes of the next couple of rides but once you get regular it will stop. Promise!!

Hi Paul Gittins! I guess a sore butt is a small price to pay. By the way, my all-time dream is to ride a bike through your area - the setting for my favorite books - James Herriot of course. I would imagine I'm not alone in that desire. My old Schwinn and I will make the trip one day! Or maybe an old Raleigh would be more appropriate.

Take some low gears for Herriot country! (and don't eat to many Yorkshire Puddings!!)

Sorry, didn't read 'lass'! You'll know what I'm talking about then. Some of the country pubs do huge YP's for Sunday lunch filled with roast beef and onion gravy. After one of these and a couple of pints your legs go all funny!
