Hello all

Just as flameburner posted, I've taken up riding to increase my level of fitness. I'm 44 and mainly want to increase my aerobic fitness, endurance and to lower blood pressure hopefullly instead of meds. I'm currently riding an old steel 10 speed I guess (double crank, 5 gear cassette) but am saving for a nicer entry level road bike. I've been on a Raleigh Sport and Masi Alare and there is a world of difference from my current bike. I'll save till I can get what I want though because I really do like to ride and I'm sure the better shape I get in, the more I'll enjoy it. I'm from Ohio and someday hope to do the GOBA tour and see just how much I like it. I'll need a year of training though....lol...at least.

I've probably only been on 10 rides since saddling up again. ( I used to ride a mountain bike, on the road for fitness). I'm sure the following would be better addressed in the training forums and I know I just need to keep riding but even in the small hills of W. Central Ohio and E. Indiana I need to go to the granny gear to keep my cadence up. Hopefully my leg strength will increase as well so I can spin a higher gear. Any training tips are welcome.

This morning, I rode a 10 mile loop, some hills I'm sure would be considered small and some wind. I tried to keep my cadence between 80 and 90 when I checked. The ride took me 43 minutes. I'm sure not the best but I do feel better every ride.

I'll quit rambling now and hope to chat with you all in here. Thanks.

Welcome to BF. Since GOBA was just last week, yep you'll need to wait a year. But it seems like you are close to Findlay. The Hancock Horizontal Hundred is in September...plenty of time between now and then to make that a goal, if centuries interest you. The HHH is all flat, cept for one freeway overpass. The perfect 1st century.

Hello roadrider63, nothing wrong with those old steel road bikes (I have plenty of them!), but that Masi you rode is a very, very nice upgrade. Steel is great for absorbing bumps in the road, but the carbon fork is a great thing to have .

A ten mile is pretty good for your tenth ride, and 43 minutes is reasonably quick (faster than me, but I have hills pretty much everywhere I go).

Don't forget to check into the regional forums--lots of Ohioans lurking here.

Welcome to BF!

Chipcom, I'm about an hour south in the Grand Lake area. Right now, any sort or rides interest me. Not sure I could even be ready for a "flat" century by Sept. I didn't realize how out of shape I was. I do know I enjoy the ride and it's much better than jogging.....
