I had a lower end Diamondback MTB about that age as well. It met an untimely end deep in the bowels of a mountain ravine
. I got an old hardtail Fuji Thrill as a replacement. I have to say, even though the Fuji is old school, I like it better than the Diamondback. So your plan to replace it probably isn't a bad idea. Do consider swapping out the knobby tyres for slicks first, though. It can make quite a bit of difference to your speed, and you may find that it works much better that way.
