Single-Speed Beginner

I've just gotten seriously into cycling in the past few weeks. I used to ride a Trek 7200 hybrid, but I got sick of it pretty quickly when I started riding on the roads regularly. I just had an old Peugeot single-speed put together at a used bike shop, so I'd like to start by getting to know more about my bike. I'm also interested in any modifications that might make road biking easier or more efficient for short people, since I'm already having a problem with my brake levers.

I'm a 22-year-old female in Philadelphia who recently finished a crazy and rewarding year of teaching middle school English. In a couple of months, I'll be entering a masters degree program in Library & Information Sciences. I'm hoping to be a bike nerd in addition to a book nerd!

Hey hetr,
As an ex-philly area, peugeot loving single speed rider who is
married to a middle school educator we have a lot in common !!
Sort of...
Welcome to the club and even though you call yourself a
'beginner', you have already learned what 85% of the riders
out there have yet to learn......Gears are overrated !!

Hello hetr, you are already a bike nerd if you are riding a singlespeed. Of course, you are a cool bike nerd .

Did you say Philadelphia? Our local resident Pug lover (to be found in the Classic & Vintage forum) is in that part of the country...

Welcome to BF!

Pound-em: What a weird coincidence -- I really love Philadelphia and how much more bike-friendly it seems to be getting. There's a definite biking subculture here. I fell for Peugeots pretty much immediately, especially once I knew how to pronounce it. It might just be the elitist in me that likes the single speed, but it makes for such an amazing ride!

East Hill: Thanks for the welcome! Hopefully the resident Pug-lover will reply to my post in Classic & Vintage! I've seen a bunch of Peugeots in Philly now that I've started looking...

You got miamijim to reply, and he's one of the experts, but not your local expert! We're looking for tolfan to check into the thread.

That's a nice bike, by the way, and unless you paid several hundred dollars, you probably got a good deal. I think almost everyone pays more for that first vintage bike than they do for subsequent bikes, simply because you don't know how to look and find. We love that kind of stuff over at C & V, though .
