New arrival

I'm mainly a bike commuter, though I didn't start that way. Middle-age "spread" got me motivated a little over six years ago, and an "entry-level" mountain bike joined my old French 10-speed. I finished the "Ore to Shore" off-road point-to-point race in upper peninsula Michigan in 2001 and that sort of gave me the idea that maybe I'd be better off on the road (but I *did* finish!). I saved up and got an Airborne "Carpe Diem" which is my main road bike. It's set up as a touring bike, with rack, fenders, drop bars, but also with mountain bike brakes and pedals. About five years ago in response to a price increase for shuttle bus tickets from the train to my workplace, I started using a folding bike. My first one was a Strida 2. It wasn't really up to the task, but it was a fun bike with an ingenious design and I put enough miles on it (1000) to recover the cost. Then I got a Dahon Helios XL and put over 3,000 miles on it. It's now my "spare", and I'm on a Dahon Mu XL which has about 2,500 miles on it. On Bike-to-Work Day this year, I rode the Mu just over 100 miles. It was not bad, though the Airborne is a little more comfortable.

I do most of my own maintenance and modification. Other hobbies and interests are domestic activities with my wife and two kids, housework, bluegrass music, outside activities. I also like my job- I teach dental students how to do root canal treatment at the local dental school.

For the last few years I have been fairly active on the Dahon web site forum (same name: steveroot).
There you have it.
