I am a runner who has decided to try competing in some local tri's. I need to purchase a used Hybrid book under $1000 dollars if anyone has any suggestions or ideas. Looking forward to entering the biking world. Tim

Do you want something modern? A real hybrid bike? Or will something like the old Centurion Dave Scott Ironman work for you?

When were you going to start competing? Where?

    Welcome to BF!

I live in Cleveland Ohio and was considering the Cleveland Tri in august of 2008. Not sure what type of bike to be looking at. I do want something comfortable to ride and will give up some speed for the comfort. I was considering the trek 7.6 fx or the cannondale adverture. Tim

    Welcome Tim.

    Don't get a hybrid for a triathlon.
We have lots of people come into our shop who are doing their first triathlon. They don't want to spend a lot on their first bike until the are better educated, so we recommend a Raleigh Cadent (~$650), a Jamis Satellite (~$775), or a Jamis Ventura Race (~$1000).

Tim, listen to the man ^^^^! If you are planning on doing your first triathlon in August of next year, you have time to do some serious training. I agree a hybrid is not the way to go.

Check out the regional forums, there may be someone out there who's got the same idea as you, and perhaps you could find a training partner.

thanks for the response. I am only considering the Trek 7.6Fx for training purposes. If I start doing tri's I would purchase a road bike of some kind. My brother is recommending the trek for training for the next year. Does that advance make sense. I test road one and liked the feel of it and the cost is only $899. Tim

Oh, that's a different matter, then. If you can afford to get both a hybrid for training, and a road bike for the actual triathlon, then go for it!
