New Cyclist, Liverpool!

Hello! onoj here,

I've been meaning to start cycling for a while, moving to a new flat out of the city prompted me to start looking for a bike and ride in to work - cheaper, quicker and healthier than the bus. Whilst moving in to my new place, I discover an old trek (I *think* its a 970 from the little bit of research I've done - need to find the SN!) on the balcony outside the bedroom. it doesn't look in too bad a condition, no obvious cracks in the frame and just your standard wear and tear from being used. I figure even if i replace everything but the frame, i could save a little bit of money over buying a new bike.

I joined these forums to get knowledge really, i always find forums a much better source of information that anywhere else, and I hope you wont let me down

Hello onoj, the Classic & Vintage folks can probably help you determine the age of your Trek. Are you a true Scouser, or a transplant from somewhere?

Welcome to BF!

I'm not a true scouser, I grew up about 15 miles down the road

the front forks on the bike don't look stock, they are considerably bigger than ones i've seen on other trek 970's (assuming it IS a trek 970 and not some POS with a trek sticker on ) I've already found asite with the explanation of trek serial numbers on, but i couldn't find the actual serial number under the bottom bracket where it should be (although it *was* dark) I plan on giving it a good clean and inspection when i get home tonight, and will take lots of photos.

You can also try dating the bike by looking at the component date codes.

Photos would be great!

[Say, you aren't from Swinton, are you?]

hehe not Swinton, St. Helens, not far from Haydock race course. Swinton is on the other side of Leigh isn't it?

is there a work in progress sub-forum on this board? I'd like to keep a log of the work I'm doing and make it available for comments, advice etc.

Hmm, interesting question. There's a forum for blogs--but I don't think what you're describing quite fits that.

If it's a vintage bike, you can always start off in Classic & Vintage, and just build on the thread, while asking for advice, and receiving comments. Many people have done that, and it allows all of us to enjoy seeing the progress and finished build.

I think you could say that Swinton is t'other side of Leigh--it's not far from Salford/Pendlebury/Urmston.
