Greetings! and Thanks! from Portland

Well, it's been 14 years since I was hit by a car riding home during my freshman year in college. Physically I was okay, bike was destroyed, and it must have done something to my brain since I haven't had a bike since!

Finally back to my senses, I'm looking at purchasing a cross bike. I've been snooping around the site for quite a while and appreciate all the great info. I've narrowed my selection down to the Bianchi Axis and the 04 Jake the Snake, and both fit my budget.

I figure I'll be on the pavement about 70% of the time, but I live outside of Forest Park (74 miles of hiking, biking, etc.) so I won't be able to help myself. Gotta get dirty

Cheers,

JR

Welcome, JR71!

Glad to hear you're getting back on the saddle again. Must have been a devestating experience to stay off for 14 years.

As for your bike choices, I don't think you could go wrong with either the Bianchi or the Kona!

What part of Portland do you live? I'm in SE, near Mt. Tabor, and commute to work which is in NW. Great city for cycling!

Forest Park is great... especially the Fireroads - like 3,5,7,10 + Springville is a good climb...

Portland is a great place to get back into biking!

Thanks for the welcome!

Gonesh9, I live near the Skyline and Cornell intersection in NW. Just a few minutes from Forest Park.

Any recommendations for local riding groups? I figured I'd just hook up with a LBS to get back into the swing of things.

Nathank, thanks for the info. I was just researching the park yesterday and all the trails. I've got a few friends over near you. One who works for Adidas in Germany, another doing work in the Czech Republic. I'll probably be heading over in the near future to visit.

Cheers,
JR

About local riding groups, I know there is a group called PUMP, Portland United Mountain Peddlers... They ride forest park every Wednesday I believe. Your best bet is to go down to River City Cycles on Martin Luther King Drive and ask them... Definitely the nest all-around shop in town.
