Another newbie from Maryland
Bought my first new bike at the end of June and have been riding since.
Last bike I got (which I still own and which has gathered dust for some 20 years) was a Panasonic road bike, a hand-me-down from my older brother.
I know next to nothing about biking; I have a good cyber-buddy who's been great about answering my questions, so I have tools (don't know how to use 'em, but I got 'em!), water, and suggestions for training for longer rides. Am a couch potato who hopes to reform somewhat, and have a vague idea that I'd like maybe possibly to do AIDSRide (384 miles in 4 days) when I am 50 (in four years). Lost my younger brother to AIDS, so that's the motivation. (Don't know if this is even possible for me, such a ride, but will aim to find out.)
So far, I like bike riding! I don't like the sore tailbone, though...
I ride trails for now. In college a few times, I commuted to school by bike, in both suburban Maryland and in NYC. (Down Fifth Avenue during rush hour on a bike.... once was plenty!)
Hope to give my son a sport or two he can carry with him through life. Don't much care what it is, but hope to expose him to enough for him to find one he likes. He learned how to ride in June. So far, so good....

Where in Maryland? If in the Baltimore/Annapolis area, have yhou tried the B&A Trail and the BWI Trail? There are also some excellent back roads in the Gambrills/Crofton/Bowie area.
In May 2002, I was where you are now. Have tools, but not a clue as to how to use them on a bike. Now, I can change spokes, true a wheel, replace shifters, cables, adjust brakes (although more by dumb luck than anything else) and have dropped 60 lbs.
Lots and lots of great places to ride.

TrekRider, PG County, near the MoCo county line. I did the B&A a couple of weeks ago. Felt like death when I started, and felt better as I rode, but was saddle sore by the end.
I've been thinking the B&A + BWI trail would make a good long ride for me -- almost 40 miles, yes? -- but haven't got that far yet. Plus I thought the B&A pretty boring!
I like birdwatching, so tend to like wooded trails, or ones that run along a stream or wetlands. I've seen a lot of cool stuff as I bike; definitely one of the attractions of biking for me.
Nice to know from your experience that there is hope for me! I do need to learn how to use the tools someday...
